Shelley's Legacy:

Help Us Care for Her Beloved Rescue Dogs

From our founder, Carlynne:

‘As you may know, our sweet rescue angel and beloved friend to many, Shelley Beals, passed away July 20, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Shelley loved nothing more than her senior rescue babies. I was fortunate to meet Shelley eight years ago and even more fortunate that she volunteered to become a forever foster for Barkee’s seniors and hospice dogs. Barkee was moved to ease her monumental worry over the thought that her dogs might not get the love and care she had always given them. We assured her that Barkee would be their forever home. Once they were settled in, we found that they were in fact a family and we knew they were meant to stay together. Since we brought in ten of Shelley’s dogs, we have ensured that each has received whatever veterinary care they need. As a result, we incurred substantial expenses. Shelley always did the very best she could by her dogs, but toward the end, financial constraints made it difficult. Their vetting has included dentals, bloodwork, and xrays as needed and there have been several emergencies, given their advanced age. We would be very grateful if you would consider a donation of any amount to help us care for these beloveds, until it is time for them to join with Shelley.’

Ramona, aka Ramonster May 2023

Rescued from the Long Beach shelter, this beautiful 15-year-old girl had been so traumatized and anxious that the shelter had to give her Trazodone to calm her. The moment we saw her soulful eyes, we knew we had to help, so we embarked on a six-hour rescue road trip. Despite her fear and skittishness, she’s proven to be a sweet and gentle soul. With lots of patience, she's slowly coming out of her shell. After a much-needed dental, she’s now toothless, but her spirit shines brighter each day as she learns to trust and feel safe again.

We have a soft spot for bonded rescues, and this trio—our second set of triplets—captured our hearts. Blanco, a 17-year-old chihuahua, is a frail senior with arthritis, dehydration, and blindness, but he’s sweet (when he wants to be) and enjoys gentle kisses. Peewee, a 16-year-old silky terrier, is grumpy and tough, with severe dental issues, paraphimosis, and arthritis, but loves snuggles on his terms. Lucy, the youngest at 12, had severe digestive issues and was hospitalized for IBS/Colitis, but with the right treatment, she’s now thriving on a permanent course of prednisone.

Julio May 2023

In 2019, we tried to rescue a senior cocker spaniel, Julio, but another rescue took him. Years later, he resurfaced when his rehoming family, who found him along with two now-deceased chihuahuas, struggled to find him a new home. Despite their efforts, no one was interested in adopting him. Then, a wonderful networker sent me the link, and just like that, Julio is with us forever. Though he's blind, mostly deaf, and has a heart murmur, he's in good shape for his age. When it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be—welcome to your forever home, Julio!
